Farming Orton Grange in the 1960s

Orton Grange Farm

We've entered a new phase here at Orton Grange Farm. We held an on-farm dispersal sale of the milking portion of the our herd on May 15, 2008. In all, Harrison and Hetherington auctioned 204 cows. But it was always our intention to resume milking, as we built up our herd again.

Now, after a rather unusual time, we're gradually getting back into milking again. Many of our young stock are coming through, and together with some young animals bought at auction, they will form the milking herd.

We're currently milking around 40 cows and that number will be increased over the next year or so. Here you can see some of our own calves which we believe will form a good basis for our future herd.

Weatherwise, the summer of 2008 was, if anything, worse than the previous one. Having sold the majority of our cows, we were keen to use the time to do lots of chores and of course to focus on the harvest.

The wet weather delayed that, but eventually we were able to get the machines into the fields without them getting bogged down. And a bit later than usual it was all completed.

The Martin family came to Orton Grange in 1956. At top left you can see an old Massey Ferguson ploughing at Orton Grange in the 1960s. And over the years our philosophy has been the same: to produce quality milk in a way that is as environmentally friendly as possible.

We also believe we have a responsibility to look after farm buildings which are redundant for agricultural purposes. We've been working hard on that for the last four years, as you'll be able to see elsewhere on our website.
